Grief and ambiguous loss are common to the experience of children and families in the child welfare system, and yet these subjects are often not discussed or explored. Ambiguous loss refers to loss without closure. At its core, ambiguous loss is all about a lack of resolution —such as when a child does not know what has happened to their parents, siblings or even former foster parents or when foster parents and CASA volunteers grieve the child who has been returned home or adopted. Ambiguous loss can also refer to a psychological loss such as a mental or emotional disappearance that, in the child welfare world, can occur because of mental illness or addiction. This workshop will explore grief and ambiguous loss and offer tools for supporting children, families and one another.

Presented by Richard Heyl de Ortiz, Director of Training and Program Support for CASA of New York. Richard is a former foster parent, an adoptive parent and was raised in kinship care.
