Open to CASA volunteers, volunteers in training, CASA staff and service providers with whom CASA collaborates
Presented by Richard Heyl de Ortiz, Director of Training and Program Support for CASA of New York State.
Secondary traumatic stress (STS) is the emotional duress can result when an individual hears about the firsthand trauma experiences children, parents and families with whom they are working. Given the nature of our work, CASA volunteers and staff should be aware of STS, sometimes also called compassion fatigue. The trauma and secondary trauma experienced by the children, parents and families to whom we are appointed can affect our organizations and organizational culture. STS is not a reality for CASA volunteers and staff, the court staff, attorneys, caseworkers with whom we collaborate can be at risk. This can impact our ability to work effectively with others in advocating for children and families. If left unaddressed, STS can have a negative impact on the ability of individuals and organizations to help children and families.
